Day One 12/9/09

2:00 a.m.

The NICU nurses have been monitoring Hank's oxygen levels for some time now. Their initial concern was that because he had some fluid in his lungs he wasn't getting the oxygen he needed. By 2:00 a.m., around 6 hours after he was born, his lungs were clearing up, but he still was not getting enough oxygen in his blood. They came to our room to tell us they were going to run some tests on his heart.

3:30 a.m.

Dr. Ramirez came back to the room to tell us that Hank was stable, but they have diagnosed him with a congenital heart disease called "Transposition of the Great Arteries", or TGA. The two arteries leaving his heart are switched.

In a normal heart blood travels from the body to the heart. The heart pumps the blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen and then returns to the heart. Then the blood is pumped to the body to deliver the oxygen and returns to the heart and starts the process over again. A basic visual picture would be a figure 8. The heart would be in the middle of the 8, with the lungs on the top and the body on the bottom.

Hank has 2 separate circulatory systems. His blood travels from his body to his heart and back to his body. It also flows from his lungs to his heart back to his lungs. The oxygen poor blood and the oxygen rich blood never mix. A basic visual picture would be two separate circles.

We are told Hank needs to be life flighted to Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in the medical center.

5 a.m.

An ambulance has arrived from CMHH and the transport team gets Hank ready for his trip to the medical center. The helicopter could not fly this morning because of the fog. Before we leave, we take Hank up to say goodbye to Samantha. By this time she has a room full of family for support. We leave The Woodlands around 6 a.m and arrive at CMHH around 6:40 a.m.

When we get to the medical center the docters run more tests to confirm what the docters in The Woodlands said.

7:45 a.m.

Dr. Balaguru meet with us in the waiting room. He did a great job of explaining to us what TGA is. He also told us that there were some other abnormalities in Hanks heart that were actually allowing some of the oxygen rich and oxygen poor blood to mix. They cannot perform a corrective surgery yet, because they want Hanks body and organs to mature to make sure his body can handle a major surgery. Dr. Balaguru told us he is going to do a procedure at 11 a.m. to make one of the holes allowing blood to mix in his heart bigger. This will keep Hank stable until he can have his corrective surgery. They will run a cathader up his umbilical cord into his heart an rip open the hole. The hole is in some kind of syptom.

9:30 a.m.

They did an ultrasound on his kidney, bladder, and brain. They said because he had heart abnormalities, there is a greater chance of some other abnormalities.

11:45 a.m.

Hank's cathader procedure starts. "God please take care of this precious baby, Amen." I meet with the anesthseologist before the procedure and he said it would last about 2 hrs. and he would come update me periodically.

1:15 p.m.

Dr. Balaguru came out and said everything went extremely well. I was getting worried because I did not receive any updates like they said. There was a feeling of relief that I can not explain and had never felt before when I heard him say everything was okay. I am already so in love with this little boy.

2:30 p.m.

Hanks ultra sound of his kidney, bladder, and brain came back normal.

3:15 p.m.

We meet with Dr. Newman, he is one of Hank's cardiologists. He said we will wait about 7-10 days before surgery. He also mentioned only 1% of babies have a congenital heart disease. He said if Hank's corrective surgery is successful, he will live a normal life. He will be able to play baseball, baseketball, golf, etc. They recommend staying away from contact sports though. Luckily, I have always been told football is not a contact sport, its a collision sport. So I think we're okay there.

We Love You Baby Hank

On Monday, December 7th at 8pm we checked into the hospital and waited for our doctor to get this PARTY started. I was 41 weeks you know and itching to have this baby since at 35 weeks my doctor said "any day now". We had a birth plan, and we wanted to do everything possible to make each decision with education and knowledge from what we had researched and learned about our new little baby boy! By 4 am Tuesday morning I was kicking for an epidural and by 9am my doctor broke my water. At that time she noticed that our little stinker had a little micomnium (poopy) in the womb so we were going to need the NICU nurses standing by to suction out any of that around that baby's mouth or nose to make sure he didn't inhale any of it with his first big breath of life. So around 7 p.m my doctor suggested we do a c section because I was stuck at 5 cm dilated and she didn't want me to be in labor longer than I had already been. We trusted her judgment and the wheels started turning FAST! As I realized what I had just said and signed up for I started freaking out in my head and felt a little nauseous.

Hank Von Harughty was born at 7:45 weighing 7 lbs 10 oz and was 20 1/4 inches long! He was so handsome. I got to hold him in recovery and check him out, then the NICU nurses wanted to finish suctioning him and caring for him for a little bit before he came to our room. This is the beginning of Hank's Story...

Sweet Friends and Sweet Treats

So I just wanted to brag on our sweet friends The Bergeron's for setting up food for us after we come home with the baby! Julie has even set up an online Care Calendar check it out it is so cool.....

Care Calendar login is:27862 security code:8134

To sign up all you do is click on the word Meal and type in what you want to bring, that way people know they are not duplicating. So cool. We are having people come every other day so we dont' have way too much since it will just be the two of us, and any help that is around.

We are so thankful for our sweet friends!

Also I know these pictures aren't the best but I made Hank and his little cousin Heath who will be born 2 days after Hank these precious little bottles of Hand Sanitizer for the hospital and for when they have visitors at their homes, to keep our babies from getting sick. Then I decided I wanted to do something little for my OBYN's Office Staff and Nurses so I made these and dropped them off at my last appointment yesterday!

I'm Thankful for..... PECAN PIE

Today I spent the day with my mom, it was very nice. I did a little work and baked with her all day. We made Taco Soup for lunch and cornbread (a little extra for me to take home as dinner too). Then we got a jumpstart on all the sweets for Thanksgiving Day. My grandmother had a heart procedure done this week and won't be able to make it to Thanksgiving this year so we had to do it for her. It was fun to get to learn how my mom and her used to do things like this together. There is something special about baking with your mom, with a little love of course. This is the best pecan pie ever..... my grandmother has lots of pecan trees so we always look forward to all of her pecan sweets she makes each holiday.

Grandma's Pecans Pie

1 cup sugar
¾ cup Light Karo syrup
3 eggs
Mix together… then add
1 dash salt
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 tbsp melted butter
1 cup pecans

Stir it all together, 350 degrees about 40 mins,
or until toothpick is clean.
I am thankful for lots of things not just pecan pie (I love it even when I am not pregnant, haha),
I am thankful for a healthy pregnancy and baby to be, and wonderful husband, a loving family, beautiful friends inside and out, a savior who loves me even though I am so unworthy of Him. I am so thankful for many things this time of year...
What are you thankful for?

Life's Little Lessons...

Well, I have had my doctor since 35 weeks telling me that she thinks Hank is coming anyday.... So, it has made such un needed anticipation ya know? Lost my plug on Thursday so the nurse said normally within a week I should deliver, another false statement. I went in today (38 weeks)and I had only dilated to a 1/2 cin. which is nothing to write home about. At 33 weeks I tore my groin muscle so as this little baby grows it puts a ton of pressure on that muscle, and is unable to heal until he is delivered. My doctor is always up beat and turns it around on me that as soon as my body will cooperate she can't wait to deliver him and will meet us in the hospital as soon as we call. Which is really sweet but has made me feel like, my body isn't doing it's job and Hank would be ready and just each day feels like an eternity. My cervix thinned out at 35 weeks.... so it's just an unfun waiting game. As soon as the appt was over I burst into tears! I want the baby to be healthy and come when he is ready but I need patience, b/c I feel like I have been given so much false hope that he was coming early. After I left the appt I got a speeding ticket on the I-45 feeder in front of Main Event, in a school zone. It was just a bad day (I didn't even try to talk to the officer).

But.... at the end of the day I have friends who are going through so much worse. Our very dear friends that are inexpecting their first baby in June Stephanie and Derek just had a miscarriage, and my girlfriend that is 31 weeks had her water break and she is going to have to stay at the hospital for over a month and try to keep from delivering her baby.

Derric and I sponsor a little girl from Rwanda through Compassion and she writes me letters once a month, when I got home from my awful day I had one in the mailbox, at the bottom of the letter she leaves me a bible verse this time it was: 1 Thessalonians 5:18 which says.... "Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

How awesome is that! I am being so caught up in myself that my poor little girl in Rwanda, Africa who lives in an AIDS infected community, barely has clean water, and is in a third world country witnessing only God knows whatd aily, I had a friend who just lost her baby, and another friend on her knees that her baby will make it, and I just want mine early because of a little discomfort. Thank you Jesus for giving me a convicted heart and surrounding me by Christian people who love me.

I am so thankful I have friends like you to pray for me. God is good.

37 Weeks and Waiting....

"Every good and perfect gift is from above." James 1:17

So Derric and I went to the doctor today for my 37 week visit, Hank is now considered full term. It is always exciting to go each week at this point to learn when the doctor thinks Hank may make his debut! She told us at 35 weeks, any day now.... When she said this she means she thinks he is healthy enough to come anyday now, not that she thinks it will be tonight! That was such a hard concept for me to wrap my head around because.... you have NO CONTROL. I want him to be a healthy baby boy and come when he is good and ready but we are so excited to meet him we hope he comes sometime soon. We have so much to be thankful for, I have had a very healthy pregnancy up to this point, sure my body has changed like lots of new mama's do, and my feet are as large as elephants feet (but my husband still kisses them and tells me how much he appreciates all that I have sacrificed for the baby).... he feels so bad for me when I have to wake up to go to the bathroom 9 times in the middle of the night, and gives me a back rub when I have shooting pain. All of this I would do again in a heartbeat for little Hank. We are so excited to me our Sweet Baby Boy....any day now!

Halloween Night

We were invited to our sweet friends house... The Slinkard's. We went last year and we dressed up so we thought we were too close to the part not to dress up!

I made my sister in laws delicious 7 layer dip and add a few skeleton's for fun!

I was a very uncomfortable about to POP Juno and Derric was my high school boyfriend who knocked me up Paulie Bleeker.

We walked aroudn the negihborhood and my sweet friend Christine came back and saw my swollen feet and gave me a 20 minute foot rub. That is the best gift I have been given since my pregnancy!!!

She then started talking like Angela Johnson and doing her nail salon talk!

Here was a picture from our costumes last year, a little bit cuter!
